Description

Ask questions and be willing to wonder
Revel™ Invitation to Psychology, 7th Edition weaves scientific thinking and critical thinking into the fabric of psychological science. Joining longtime authors Carole Wade and Carol Tavris, new co-authors Samuel Sommers and Lisa Shin (of Tufts University) call upon their research and teaching expertise to speak to today’s students. Their contributions include expanded gender coverage as well as engaging new cultural and pop-cultural examples. By prompting students to separate fact from fiction and to distinguish wishful thinking from thinking wisely, the authors inspire students to ask questions and be willing to wonder — and help them become 21st-century thinkers.

Revel is Pearson’s newest way of delivering our respected content. Fully digital and highly engaging, Revel replaces the textbook and gives students everything they need for the course. Informed by extensive research on how people read, think, and learn, Revel is an interactive learning environment that enables students to read, practice, and study in one continuous experience — for less than the cost of a traditional textbook.

NOTE: Revel is a fully digital delivery of Pearson content. This ISBN is for the standalone Revel access card. In addition to this access card, you will need a course invite link, provided by your instructor, to register for and use Revel.
Dynamic content designed for the way today’s students read, think, and learn brings concepts to life

  • Videos and interactives integrated directly into the author-created narrative keep students engaged as they read through each chapter. Thanks to this media-rich presentation of content, students are more likely to complete their assigned reading and retain what they’ve read.
    • An exclusive video series, created by new co-authors Samuel Sommers and Lisa Shin, brings the details of research to life through modern study reenactments, clinical interviews, and engaging demonstrations. Featuring diverse subjects, these videos further emphasize the text’s themes of gender and culture.
    • Chapter-opening survey questions allow students to compare their own perceptions about psychological topics with those of other students taking the course. The topics introduced in these chapter openers are revisited in Shared Writing Activities at the end of each chapter, bringing critical thinking full circle.
    • Interactive review tables, chapter outlines, and chapter summaries (in paragraph form) help students review what they’ve learned.
  • Embedded assessments such as quizzes and concept checks afford students opportunities to check their understanding at regular intervals before moving on. Assessments in Revel™ let instructors gauge student comprehension frequently, provide timely feedback, and address learning gaps along the way.
  • The Revel mobile app lets students read, practice, and study — anywhere, anytime, on any device. Content is available both online and offline, and the app syncs work across all registered devices automatically, giving students great flexibility to toggle between phone, tablet, and laptop as they move through their day. The app also lets students set assignment notifications to stay on top of all due dates.
  • The writing functionality in Revel enables educators to integrate writing — among the best ways to foster and assess critical thinking — into the course without significantly impacting their grading burden. Self-paced Journaling Prompts throughout the narrative encourage students to express their thoughts without breaking stride in their reading. Assignable Shared Writing Activities direct students to share written responses with classmates, fostering peer discussion. And Essays integrated directly within Revel allow instructors to assign the precise writing tasks they need for the course.
  • Highlighting, note taking, and a glossary let students read and study however they like. Educators can add notes for students, too, including reminders or study tips.

The text’s hallmark student-focused content has been refreshed by two new co-authors

  • NEW! For the 7th Edition, longtime authors Carole Wade and Carol Tavris are joined by new co-authors Samuel Sommers and Lisa Shin — gifted educators who call upon their mastery of learning dynamics in today’s classrooms to inspire students. This expanded author team is even better equipped to help students learn to think like psychologists, and see how course content can help them better understand their own lives.
  • The authors have woven the process of critical thinking seamlessly throughout the narrative, empowering students to learn how to think critically through a three-pronged approach:
    • The first step is to define what critical thinking is and what it is not. Chapter 1 introduces Eight Guidelines to Critical Thinking, which are drawn on throughout the text as research and popular ideas are evaluated. Following these guidelines will help students separate good psychology from pseudoscience.
    • The authors model these guidelines in their evaluations of research and popular ideas. Throughout the text, the authors challenge readers to evaluate what the evidence reveals — and does not reveal — about a particular phenomenon.
    • Finally, students are given many opportunities to practice what the authors have preached. End-of-module and end-of-chapter assessments help measure students’ understanding of the material, and encourage them to go back and review what they don’t recall or comprehend.
  • The authors report up-to-date findings from biology and neuroscience wherever they are relevant throughout the text — in discussions of emotion, stress, aging, mental illness, personality, and many other topics.
  • The authors integrate studies of gender and culture throughout the text. They cover gender differences — and similarities — in areas such as emotion, motivation to heroism, sexuality, love, and eating disorders. And they present empirical findings about culture and ethnicity throughout the book.
  • Throughout the text, the authors candidly address controversies in the field of psychology, and suggest the kinds of questions that might lead to useful answers in each case. Examples of the controversies discussed include about oversimplification of brain-scan technology (Chapter 2); the disease versus learning models of addiction (Chapter 13); and conflicts of interest in research on medication for psychological disorders (Chapter 14).

Fresh and updated content from new co-authors Sommers and Shin engages today’s students

  • UPDATED! The research throughout the text has been updated to reflect progress in the field and cutting-edge discoveries. Highlights include:
    • Discussion of psychology as a “hub science”;
    • Research regarding the cognitive advantages of taking notes by hand rather than with a laptop, as well as the consequences of multitasking in the classroom;
    • Emerging techniques for manipulating brain function, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS);
    • Critical analysis of the notion of a “hook-up culture” among young adults, as well as new data on the use of speed dating to study the science of relationships;
    • New discussion of sexual orientation and the experiences (and popular culture depictions of) transgendered individuals;
    • Research on multiracial identity, including its relationship to cognitive outcomes;
    • New coverage of potential diagnostic inaccuracy of the DSM and the shift to study psychopathology dimensionally;  and
    • Expanded focus on recent real-world events and popular culture to illustrate psychological principles and spark students’ curiosity.
  • NEW! Chapter-ending Taking Psychology With You sections convey various lessons for readers to apply to their own lives, whether in terms of how to get better (and more) sleep, how to become a more conscientiously engaged member of social groups, or how to think more clearly about mental disorders.
  • NEW! All text content is now mapped to revised learning objectives, which highlight the major concepts throughout each chapter. The Test Bank items are also keyed to these learning objectives.
  • UPDATED! For the 7th Edition, the authors have reordered the chapters to be more in line with the most common course syllabi.

Superior assignability and tracking tools help educators make sure students are completing their reading and understanding core concepts

  • The assignment calendar allows educators to indicate precisely which readings must be completed on which dates. This clear, detailed schedule helps students stay on task by eliminating any ambiguity as to which material will be covered during each class. When they understand exactly what is expected of them, students are better motivated to keep up.
  • The performance dashboard empowers educators to monitor class assignment completion as well as individual student achievement. Actionable information, such as points earned on quizzes and tests and time on task, helps educators intersect with their students in meaningful ways. For example, the trending column reveals whether students’ grades are improving or declining, helping educators to identify students who might need help to stay on track.
  • LMS integration provides institutions, instructors, and students easy access to their Revel courses via Blackboard Learn™ and Canvas™. With single sign-on, students can be ready to access an interactive blend of authors’ narrative, media, and assessment on their first day. Flexible, on-demand grade synchronization capabilities allow educators to control exactly which grades should be transferred to the Blackboard or Canvas Gradebook.
