New and updated features of this title

Focus on the latest standards in concrete

  • UPDATED: The text conforms to the latest ACI-318 standards needed to stay current.
  • EXPANDED: New information on common practice issues (Ch. 7 and 14) has been added. Issues include floor vibrations, load testing of concrete structures, one-way slabs subjected to concentrated loads, and closure or pour strips in reinforced concrete floors.
  • EXPANDED: Fire resistance of concrete structural elements and specifications for concrete buildings (Ch. 14) are addressed as two common practice and design issues needing attention.

New content on design elements

  • EXPANDED: New information on common design elements (Ch. 1, 2, 4 and 9) covers concrete mixes, gravity load distribution in concrete floor systems, slabs-on-grade, design of corbels, design for bi-axial bending of columns, design of slender columns, and diaphragms, drag struts and chords.
  • EXPANDED: Two-way slab design (Ch. 6) using the direct design method together with the equivalent frame method is addressed in the new edition.
  • EXPANDED: The design of pile caps and deep beams (Ch. 10) using the strut and tie method is now discussed.

About our author

Abi Aghayere is a professor of structural engineering in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia and has more than 20 years design experience in the structural engineering consulting field. He is the co-author of Structural Wood Design (ASD/LRFD), 2nd Edition, and Structural Steel Design: A Practice Oriented Approach, 2nd Edition.

For courses in reinforced concrete.

A practitioner’s guide to reinforced concrete design
Reinforced Concrete Design integrates current building and material codes with realistic examples to give readers a practical understanding of this field and the work of its engineers. Using a step-by-step solution format, the text takes a fundamental, active-learning approach to analyzing the design, strength, and behavior of reinforced concrete members and simple reinforced concrete structural systems. Content throughout the 9th edition conforms to the latest version of ACI-318 Code. It expands discussion of several common design elements and practice issues, and includes more end-of-chapter problems reflecting real-world design projects.
